Biotechnology permeates all aspects of our daily lives. It affects the food we eat, the safety of our drinking water, the clothes we wear and how we wash and care for them, the medicines we take, the vaccines and even the fuel we put in our cars. Taking into consideration the global situation in the world today, it is unimaginable without biotechnology research and innovation. The biotechnology sector has a growing potential to become the backbone of the industries of the future. As the importance of the biotechnology sector is growing, in parallel competitiveness within the sector is growing too. This paper focuses on assessing the competitiveness of the biotechnology sector. This paper focuses on assessing the competitiveness of the biotechnology sector. The object of the Project: Competitiveness of the biotechnology sector. The purpose of the project: to identify the factors of competitiveness, which are affecting the biotechnology sector, and to develop recommendations. Objectives of the project: • to reveal the challenges of competitiveness of the biotechnology sector; • to examine the factors determining competitiveness from the theoretical point of view; • to develop a research methodology for competitiveness factors in the biotechnology sector; • to evaluate the factors impacting the competitiveness of the Lithuanian biotechnology sector. Research methods: systematic and comparative analysis of scientific literature, expert survey and case study to examine the factors determining the competitiveness of the biotechnology industry The results of the project revealed that the Lithuanian biotechnology sector is most affected by internal competitive factors, such as: development of marketing activities, production factors, planning and implementation of the company's vision and strategy, concentration towards the development of exclusive products, planning and implementation of management solutions. Although external factors of competitiveness of the Lithuanian biotechnology sector remained in the background, the project results singled out: the importance of country regulation, the value of innovation policy, possibilities to integrate into a global business, banks 'positions towards biotechnology sector companies, and companies' opportunities to integrate into EU industry. |
