Abstract [eng] |
This Master‘s Final Degree Project investigates and analyzes application of social media communication in M. Valančius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality. It is noticeable that globalizing and rapid change of information society environment determines new citizens – information users – needs and usage features. In this constantly changing context, vividly expressed in library's social life as well as in its content change, there is a decrease of demand in traditional libraries services. Libraries, that are suppliers of cultural services and public sector institutions, use their resources to serve the public interest – developing publicly spiritual, cultural and intellectual education. In order to maintain leadership and remain competitive, libraries need to focus on a deliberate and consistent communication with users strategy. Communication with users takes place not only in the library itself but also in the virtual space including social media. In international discourse, the usage of social media for communication in public libraries already receives enough attention. The influence of the usage of social media on social functions of libraries is discussed by scholars and is widely discussed in international librarian communities. Unfortunately, the usage of social media in Lithuanian public sector is quite an experimental area, with little analysis of possible models of communication in social media. Therefore, in the case of M. Valancius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality, communication gaps in the public library are investigated and recommendations for elimination are provided. The purpose of the Final Degree Project is to identify opportunities for improvement of social media communication in M. Valancius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality. Theoretical part of the Project analyzes public libraries, communication concepts and social media presented in the scientific literature as a means of communication, discusses the experience of Lithuanian regional municipal public libraries in communication using social media. The analytical part of the final work presents and analyzes the results of questionnaire surveys of the library users and employees “Possibilities and application of social media for communication of M. Valancius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality”. In the final part of the Project the solutions and opportunities for improvement of social media communication in M. Valancius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality are formulated. |
