Abstract [eng] There is a general belief that consumption has a negative impact on the environment and people welfare. The relevance of sustainable consumption behavior is determined by the increasing trend of excess consumption in the world, which leads to unsustainable patterns of consumer consumption. In order to balance the consumption of natural resources, consumers are encouraged to choose sustainable consumption behavior. In view of the fact that most of the research focuses on factors promoting sustainable consumption behavior, there is a lack of research to identify things that have a negative impact on sustainable consumption behavior. Consumer materialism is relevant not only because of the negative effects on environment, but also of the links with consumer purchasing patterns. There are many factors that predispose to materialism: low self-esteem, a feeling of insecurity, the pursuit of social status, and perceived social isolation. For individuals who feel lonely and whose basic social needs are not satisfactory, consumer materialism becomes a compensated way. Perceived social isolation is becoming more and more relevant because of the impact of consumer well-being on both purchasing and consumption processes and results as well as the aspirations of material need.
