| Abstract [eng] |
This thesis explores the possibility for adaptation of the Virbalis Evangelical Lutheran Church into children and youth center, while keeping the buildings architectural value. This project has two social partners: Virbalis Eldership and the community of Virbalis Basic School. The final result will be presented to the communities of Virbalis as a foundation for a future dialogue. Thesis presents theoretical and empirical research, which forms the basis for conversion project. In this work, conversion is used to integrate the functions of a youth center with the church building and its surrounding territory. However, this conversion does not alter the primary purpose of the church, therefore deconsecration processes are not needed. This project includes design of an additional building for the youth center, the reconstruction of the existing church and the integration of a public space within the church itself. A site plan and interior design proposals also have been developed. This work incorporates innovative and contemporary architectural principles and solutions. The result of this work is environmentally sensitive, respectful project that honors local communities. Project holds potential to become a tool for strengthening the towns morale and local identity. |
