Abstract [eng] Glandular breast tissues are very sensitive to ionizing radiation, for this reason it is necessary to reduce dose absorbed in a breast during diagnostic examinations and increase the probability of detection cancerous lesions. Development of physical anthropomorphic phantoms is a key to solve these issues as it could be used to optimize mammographic modalities. Currently existing breast phantoms are very simple and do not meet properties of the real breast tissues. One of the main goals of this study is to create a new type of phantom which has similar internal structures and radiological characteristics to those in the real breast. This study is unique as different materials were tested to match the properties of the breast tissues in the photon energy range used in mammography. As well in this study polycarbonate is proposed as the material with equivalent properties to malignant masses. Selected materials were used to manufacture the anthropomorphic breast phantom model. Mean absorbed dose of 1.53 mGy and 3D dose distribution were determined inside the phantom under standard conditions of exposure during the diagnostic examination of a breast. Investigation revealed that the radiographic image of the phantom appears the same as a mammogram of a breast and visibility of the objects mimicking cancerous tissues were poor using an automatic exposure control.
