Th.e down.turn in the p.rimary produ.ction of hard co.al, lign.ite, crude oil, natural gas and more recently nuc.lear energy l.ed to a si.tuation whe.re the EU w.as incre.asingly relia.nt on pri.mary ene.rgy im.ports in or.der to satis.fy demand.
