| Abstract [eng] |
Mathematical competences are among the most necessary competences that have important implications for life and professional fields. Mathematics education develops problem-solving skills, critical thinking and cooperation skills. These qualities are particularly important in a technological society. As society changes, so does the educational process, which can no longer be organised without information technology. The use of playful methods in mathematics lessons demonstrates very significant changes in terms of not only student engagement and active participation in lessons, but also in terms of improving mathematical achievement. Pupils with hearing impairments have low mathematical achievement, as many authors point out that the educational process is not adapted to the special educational needs of pupils with hearing impairments. The aim of this paper is to reveal the potential of the play-based approach to mathematics learning for students with hearing impairment. The research strategy was an experiment involving experimental and control groups. The experimental group used gamification methods during the study, the control group did not. Mathematics Progress Monitoring Tests were used to measure the results, which showed that play-based approaches have a significant impact on mathematical achievement. The experimental group moved from basic to advanced levels of achievement. More tasks requiring higher order thinking skills were completed correctly. |
