Water compromises 50 – 70 % of body weight and performs, many vital functions – regulates body temperature, blood volume and pressure, acts as a lubricant for the joints, and maintains the proper structure of body tissues as well as provides a medium for the transportation of nutrients and allows various biochemical metabolic reactions. You can often hear that you need to drink a certain number of cups of water to maintain proper bodily function, but unfortunately, it is highly individual and can vary. How much water each person needs to consume depends on many factors - age, gender, activity level, and climate. For certain groups of people, a proper balance of body fluids is extremely important, due to the specific nature of the job, the work environment, or the climate. Such groups include farm workers, professional athletes, the military, the elderly, and people with kidney disease. |
