Abstract [eng] Machining industry is the corner stone of any well-functioning economy. Adoption of either already available or newly discovered materials has for a long time been a driving force of progress and innovation in the machining industry. One group of materials possessing high industry transformation potential, could be the group referred to in academic literature as hard, brittle materials. This group is finding increasingly crucial applications in fields of optics, medicine, aerospace etc. Commonly exhibited desirable characteristics of these materials are thermal stability, rigidity, low wear chemical inertness etc. However, the hardness and brittleness of these materials tend to negatively impact the machineability of these materials. The brittleness, quantified by a low fracture toughness results in brittle deformation, when the workpiece is exposed to an excessively high of a machining scale. This negatively influences the machining quality, by introducing cracks, and subsurface damage into the final product. In order to machine a HBM in ductile mode, using conventional methods, it is necessary to limit the material removal rate. However, such approach, is costly, with regards to both – time and machining resources (tools, energy etc.). Vibration assisted machining (vam) and namely vibration assisted grinding (vag), were found to be the most readily applicable and flexible approaches to improving machinability of HBM. However, the current research on vam applications tends to focus on auxiliary effects of vam in HBM grinding (improved cooling, extended tool lifetime etc.) Instead of improving ductile mode grinding parameters (critical depth, material removal rate etc.).
