Abstract [eng] An overview of the evolution of research in technologies and heat and mass transfer and the preparation of thermal engineering specialists at the Heat and Atom Energy department of Kaunas University of Technology since its establishment in 1922 at the Engineering Department of Lithuanian University under the name of Internal Combustion Engines Department up to the year 2007 is presented. Most significant research directions and their development are presented and the main results related to heating and cooling systems, water preparation for boilers, efficient energy use and saving and packaging issues in Lithuanian enterprises, heat and mass transfer in two-phase system of foam, films and liquid drops are discussed. The potential of the educational group of the department is discussed and the evolution of training thermal engineering specialist is presented.
