Abstract [eng] This Master’s dissertation analyses garment construction and sealing technology influence towards the quality of a thread. After conducting literature review, it was found that, even as often as quality of protective garments is being analysed, seam quality is not being taken in to account enough. Seams are rarely being analysed despite the fact that they play a fundamental role in ensuring thermos protection and human comfort. Unfortunately, in most of the cases, solution is not being offered either. The work examines of 4 multilayer waterproof materials, which are joined by sealed seams. Three seam constructions and two sealing technologies are analyzed. In each case, seam thickness is being measured to see, which factors have the most influence on the quality of a sewn and sealed seam. Furthermore, after hydrostatic pressure test, it was confirmed that the resistance to water penetration has been determined by the order of both seam construction and sealing technology as well as thickness of combining fabric. Consequently, during this study, it was proved that, the thicker the fabric, the more influence order of seam construction and sealing technology have on the quality of seam. In other words, thicker seam results in better water permeability. On contrary, the order of seam construction and sealing technology has less influence on thin fabric results. The results of this study were illustrated through conducting another analysis on protective garments for outdoor activity. The above analysis has proven that some construction solutions of products in the market are at potential or high risk. Due to the large extent of layers, appearing after intersecting seams in junctions and specific elements of the seam technology it makes it hard to ensure high quality manufacturing and waterproof seams. Based on this analysis, recommendations to reduce the amount of risky junction constructions and to ensure quality of sealing technology as well as fabric permeability have been proposed.
