Changes in the field of education is permanent and complex process as the education is a significant factor which modernizes the society and helps respond to and manage the economic, political, sociocultural challenges and challenges of globalisation. Management of changes of education challenges both the heads of the schools and the teachers while emphasising the problem of management competence of the latter. When discussing the work quality of these specialists, it is important to note that everyone responsible for pedagogical work needs to have management competence. This competence encompasses not only pedagogical, but also management activities, i.e. ability to plan, organise and control the process of education; to lead pupils and their parents; to take active role in the activities of the school community. Researches of management competence in the school of general education reveal that there is a lack of knowledge and skills of management in teachers’ everyday activities. In addition to this, the gap between the requirements for teachers’ competences and the needs of educational organisation exists. That justifies that the experiences of management competence of teachers of schools of general education and requirements for this competence are relevant scientific problem and its solution requires involvement not only of those who form the system of education, but also of teachers themselves. The object of the master thesis: management competence of the teachers of the schools of general education. The aim of the thesis: to examine the expression of and the need to develop the management competence of the teachers of the schools of general education. The aim of the thesis is further elaborated by tasks, which define the structure of the paper. In the theoretic part of the thesis the concepts of competency and management competence are analysed, the elements of the management competence are identified and justified. The results of the research on the requirements of management competence of the teachers and on the expression and the need to develop the management competence of the teachers of the schools of general education of Ukmergė are presented in the empirical part of the paper. The methodology, which enabled to fulfil the tasks, is composed of analysis of scientific literature, questionnaire and document analysis, analysis of statistical data and content analysis. The analysis of the scientific literature allows stating that the competence is understood as the abilities, knowledge and its application by the employees/ organisation; personal skills/ characteristics; dimension of behaviour. The management competence may be defined as the ability to conduct the functions/ operations related to management; professional information/ knowledge; combination of professional skills; the set of personal characteristics. The following elements of management competence are most often highlighted and discussed in the scientific context: ability to plan and organise; ability to work in a team, to lead and to control. The content analysis of the documents regulating the education system of Lithuania and of job descriptions revealed the following requirements of management competence for the teachers of the schools of general education: ability to initiate and coordinate pedagogical and management activities; ability to plan, organise and lead; to work in a team, to cooperate; ability to assess the competencies. The empirical research was conducted in order to assess the expression of and the need to develop the management competence of the teachers of the schools of general education of Ukmergė. The research revealed that the teachers of the schools chosen for the research have the ability to work in a team in order to reach agreement; to control/ assess the process of education while clearly presenting the results of progress evaluation to the schoolchildren. However, the teachers are lacking of the abilities to initiate changes, new ideas and projects as well as of knowledge of management and management itself. Following the results of the research, the recommendations/ guidelines for the development of the management competence of the schools of general education have been prepared. They are directed towards the following groups: the heads and teachers of the schools of general education and those who form the policy and system of education. |
