The paper deals with the linguistic peculiarities of informational messages in the form of public signs. The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the structural and semantic content of the informational messages for cross-cultural and cross-linguistic representation. It draws upon the principles of the pragmatic-discourse analytic approach. A comparable corpus of randomly selected signs and posters referring to the information on COVID-19-related behaviour expectations from citizens while visiting public places in the form of photos was collected in Lithuanian and Ukrainian contexts in 2021–2022. A qualitative data analysis was conducted with the focus on spotlighting and comparing the syntactic/structural, grammatical, and lexico-semantic means of textual organization of such messages in two languages and cultures. Our research corroborates the findings of recent studies with Estonian, Finnish, French, Ukrainian, and other languages, but also shows that some differences are language dependent. |
