Abstract [eng] Phosphating is the most widely used form of metal pretreatment. Although the process was initially developed as a simple method of preventing corrosion, the changing end uses of phosphated articles have forced the modification of the existing processes and the development of innovative methods to substitute the conventional ones. Almost all mass-produced articles fabricated from sheet metal will be treated in this way. Maintenance of the bath parameters and operating conditions at an optimum level is a complicated process, especially in continuous and largescale phosphating. Moreover, baths that have been used for a long time are rendered ineffective due to the formation of sludge. It has to be removed periodically to assure a proper bath operation. This review article discusses the methods and possibilities of phosphating sludge removal and inertization. The reviewed studies show a possibility to immobilize phosphating sludge, using ceramic matrix vitrification or clinkerization processes. Heavy metalcontaining sludges have a potential to be utilized as alternative raw materials in cement, ceramics and glass production.
