Abstract [eng] Currently the students studying computer sciences are taught UML-based system modelling courses. The courses` curriculums introduce students to object-oriented information systems engineering. Unfortunately, students often face difficulties since the conveyed knowledge is difficult to retain because the complexity of the material. The lack of motivation hinders student ability to retain the course material and successfully apply skills in practice. In this thesis UML-based information system modelling is investigated. With the intention of improving the teaching process the education of gamification is analyzed. After examining the problems, the aim of this research was set to increase student motivation and engagement into the learning process by introducing gamification. An implemented gamification solution for motivating students is described in this paper. The paper outlines a new level-based structure for teaching UML modelling and implemented “Moodle” course which incorporates other gamification elements such as points, leaderboard, badges and item collection. The solution is examined in two iterations. After the first iteration the course was improved and later analyzed once again. The data collected during the second experiment was used to test hypotheses. The confirmatory data analysis shows that gamification significantly improved students` internal motivation and the average student assessment score.
