The master’s thesis analyses the possibility of revitalizing abandoned urban structures using the principles of sensory urbanism. In modern cities, there are increasingly areas that are becoming unattractive to local and urban habitants and are losing their functionality and identity due to their poor physical condition. The regeneration of such spaces is a complex process that requires technical, theoretical and conceptual solutions to restore the relationship between urban space and its users. This work aims to explore how sensory urbanism approaches can contribute to the creation of vibrant and engaging urban spaces that are not only understood visually but also through other sensory experiences. The theoretical part analyses and organizes academic literature on the theory and practice of sensory urbanism. It analyses how sensory aspects – sounds, smells, textures, tactile surfaces and odors – can influence the attractiveness and identity of urban spaces. It explores how these principles of sensory urbanism can be applied in urban planning to create unique and engaging environments. The empirical research through surveys and interviews with experts allowed to validate the hypotheses and the principles of sensory urbanism. A conceptual model has been developed based on this, which provides the basic design guidelines. Based on the conceptual model, an experimental project has been developed for territory in Aleksotas, Kaunas, with the aim of creating socially active, aesthetically attractive and emotionally engaging public spaces. The project applies the concept of new urbanism at the level of functional planning and uses the established principles of sensory urbanism to detail the solutions. This not only allows for the renewal of the city's infrastructure, but also for the creation of emotionally engaging spaces that promote community and positive social interaction. The principles of sensory urbanism allow for a holistic approach to spatial planning, incorporating not only visual but also sensory experiences that strengthen the bond between the city and its inhabitants. |
