Abstract [eng] |
Relevance of the research. Protected urban landscapes are usually perceived as old parts of a town or old towns. Such historical hubs are found in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Kėdainiai and other towns in Lithuania. Perhaps such landscapes can be found in each state of Europe; the most valuable are included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. History of these cities or towns lasts for centuries; however, even on these territories the transformation as a process shaping the woven fabric is inevitable. A city or a town is exposed to changes; therefore, the old parts of cities or towns should be adjusted to the life of a particular period. Because of that reason city or town centres were being rebuilt, reconstructed or regenerated. A relevant present-day problem deals with the creation of new architecture in historical environment which makes an impact on the valuable properties of old towns. The aim of the research: to form the principles of the possibilities for transformation and development of protected urban landscapes grounding on analysis of theoretical and practical materials, results of the empirical research and the experimental project. The object of the research: protected urban landscapes: old towns and their valuable properties, works of their management. Objectives of the research: 1) to find out the concept of the surveyed object and the principles of its formation that are presented in literature and legal documents; 2) to form hypothetical principles of management and development of protected urban landscapes; 3) to test the working hypothetical model, to form the conception model of the possibilities for development of old towns after carrying out the empirical research (sociological survey, correlation analysis), grounding on obtained research results; 4) to analyse the transformations of Lithuanian old towns and, referring to the multi-criteria assessment of old towns, to select one alternative for implementation of an experimental project; 5) to carry out research and analysis of immediate surroundings of Telšiai old town and to prepare an experimental project for management of a major public space, the Market Square, implementing the formulated conception model; 6) to present a principled model of possibilities for transformation and development of protected urban landscapes. Content and structure of the Thesis. The Master’s Thesis consists of 3 parts: analysis of literature sources, empirical research and experimental project. The volume of the Thesis is 90 pages, including 51 figures and 8 tables. The text is supplemented with 12 Appendices. The part dedicated to analysis of literature sources explores information sources (books, research articles, legal acts regulating protection), generalises results, the hypothetical model is designed. In the part of the empirical research, according to a designed programme, a sociological questionnaire-based survey of society and architecture specialists is conducted, collection of data on the object under research and correlation analysis research are carried out, research results are analysed and generalised. In the part of the experimental project, grounding on multi-criteria assessment of old towns, one alternative is selected by applying the local ideal point method. Analysis of the condition of a chosen location is carried out and solutions of the experimental project are foreseen. |
