The principles and methods used in learning and teaching foreign languages like French are very different from the ones of the first, i.e. the native language. A person learns the first language unconsciously by listening to people who surround him or her and by learning to speak himself or herself. However, the second, i.e. the foreign language is learnt by understanding how the language works, what are its components and how are they connected. But still, one of the most important components of a language is without a doubt a word. The vocabulary which allows to express one’s thoughts, describe the surrounding world and the grammar which allows to connect words into logical sentences would not exists without a word. Therefore, it is very important to enrich the vocabulary when learning a foreign language in order to perform the main function of the language, i.e. to communicate with people. In the processes of teaching and learning the ways of enriching of the vocabulary are closely related with used methods. Even though the methods of learning (teaching) of foreign languages changed during the time, each of them one way or another paid a lot of attention to the enrichment of the vocabulary. It is important to mention that digital teaching and learning tools that are attributed to e-learning tools in the scientific literature had a considerable influence on the methods of teaching (learning) of foreign languages. They make learning easier not only in the classroom, but also encourages the independent learning, allows the student to choose the content of learning himself or herself, to create the model of his or her learning process, to learn anywhere at any time. For these tools to be effective they need to meet certain requirements. However, the possibilities of digital learning and teaching tools to enrich the vocabulary of students currently is relative and not yet analyzed problem. More and more students are choosing such tools for independent learning and the number of teachers who use them in their classes is increasing. Therefore, it is relevant to determine the possibilities of digital learning and teaching tools to enrich the vocabulary of students and to apply them in foreign language education process itself. The analysis of a particular case was chosen: the possibilities of digital teaching (learning) tool “Duolingo” to enrich the French vocabulary of students. The possibilities was measured by creating the system of characteristics, criteria and indicators which was used in the analysis of \"Duolingo\", half-structured interview and written enquiry Having summarized the results of the research, it can be claimed that \"Duolingo\" can be used only as an additional tool for enrichment of students’ French vocabulary and teaching (learning) with this tool is suitable for those who have no lower than B1 English level. |
