Each country faces the challenge of determining an optimal structure of government expenditure. Regarding the cyclical nature of the economy, the countries can not apply a constant composition of government expenditure. Structure of government expenditure has to be adjusted to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Therefore, it is important to determine what types of government expenditure (according classification of government functions) are most connected with the change of the economic cycle, in order to stimulate economic growth by reallocating of government funds. The aim of this research is to evaluate the impact of economic crisis on composition of government expenditure in European Union countries, in order to find out how the economic crisis may affect the structure of government expenditure in European Union countries and how to determine the optimal structure of government expenditure which stimulates economic growth and change in the economic cycle from contraction to expansion. |
