Abstract [eng] In order to reduce the heat loss through the building constructions not only walls and roof must be well insulated. A sufficient attention should be paid to the insulation of the below-grade surfaces of the building. Heat loss through the foundations and slab on grade floor are significant because it can account for 15 % of the total building heat losses. In this thesis the heat transfer to the ground of the average size residential house during the heating season is analyzed. The calculation model considers a rectangular building with floor area from 80 m² to 150 m² and the ratio between floor dimensions changes from 0,1 to 1 (square floor). The analytical research is carried out to find optimal option for insulating the building foundations and slab on grade floor. Calculations are based on the method defined in STR 2.01.09:2012 and International Standard ISO 13370:2008. Numerical results show that heat loss through the below-grade surfaces of the building is highly dependent on how well the floor on the ground is insulated. When thermal insulation of the floor construction is installed in the whole area of the building, heat loss is reduced by approximately 75% compared to the insulation option when thermal insulation is fitted only on the perimeter of outer wall. The shape and size of the building have also an important impact – the bigger the building is with the shape more like a square, the smaller is the heat loss to the ground.
