Abstract [eng] With rapid technological development and globalisation, the traditional market is no longer as attractive to the population as it once was. As society becomes more modern, the environment must also change, and markets are no exception. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the design principles and problems of a modern market and to develop a design for a public space and a new concept for a market in Gargždai. UAB "Gargždų turgus" located in Gargždai has been operating since 1993. The management bodies of the company are the meeting of shareholders and the board. 90 % of the company's shares are owned by the Klaipėda District Municipality and 10 % by 4 small shareholders. The current existing market is in the heart of the city, but the existing structures no longer meet the needs of today's buyers, sellers and community. Theoretical research was carried out - literature and secondary sources on the concept and history of public space, the impact of spatial design on the environment, and the principles of successful public space design have been summarised. In order to create a new concept of the market, the concept and history of the market is analysed, the idea of the market as a public space is established, the relationship between the market and the public realm is established, and the advantages and challenges are highlighted. Possible options for the sustainable development of the project are outlined. Best practices and design recommendations are examined. Based on the results, a hypothetical model is developed which combines the principles of successful public space and marketplace design. Empirical research was carried out, four main research methods were chosen to confirm or refute the raised hypotheses - survey of the public and merchants, interviews of employees, specialists, local observations, and analysis of secondary sources. Based on the obtained results, a conceptual model was developed. The main principles identified include physical, socio-cultural and economic features, these principles must be implemented in accordance with certain principles of sustainable regeneration. The most important idea of the new concept is universal design, variety of functions, restoration of culture and historical identity using modern, contemporary solutions. Based on the theoretical and empirical research, a conceptual model has been developed for the experimental design of the public space and the new concept of the market in Gargždai. The analysis of the current state of the territory has revealed the potential and opportunities of the territory. Based on the studies and analyses, the territory of the market is being redeveloped, the existing buildings are being demolished, a new functional zoning of the territory is being created, and the historical identity is being restored.
