Abstract [eng] |
Novelty and relevance of the topic. Even though translating news from around the world may not be the most recent study issue within the discipline of translation studies, it is still contemporary enough with a variety of approaches and requires further study (Valdeón, 2021). Since international news articles are widely available to anybody with an internet connection, they have become an integral part of the lives of numerous individuals worldwide. News report production is regarded as an intricate procedure, and adaptation is an essential feature in the news translation process as it requires several distinct adaptations in order to accommodate the expectations of the target demographic, which is frequently disconnected from the source of the information by distance and culture, in terms of the format and content (Gambier, 2006; Bielsa, 2016; Valdeón, 2023). In order to accomplish this aim, journalists can employ a variety of adaptation processes, such as reconstructive reporting, summary reporting, fictive reporting or transcreation, as well as plain reporting if the source text did not contain any material or intricate cultural elements for which adaptation would be needed (Mossop, 2010). The object of this research is adaptation in translation of international news from English into Lithuanian. The aim of the research is to analyse the instances of adaptation in translation of international news from English into Lithuanian. In order to achieve the aim of the research, the following objectives have been set: 1. To present a general overview of the theoretical framework of international news translation and adaptation; 2. To theoretically ground the significance of adaptation in the translation of international news 3. To present the empirical findings of adaptation in international news translation; 4. To analyse the examples of adaptation in translation of international news in translation from English into Lithuanian. The research methods employed during the study are quantitative method, content analysis as well as comparative and descriptive approaches. The research encompasses introduction, a theoretical part with emphasis on relevant literature about the theoretical, translation, and adaptation elements of news discourse. Details on the quantity of data gathered and the method for adaptation processes categorization implemented is available in the research's methodological section. The research's empirical part classifies and examines the data that was gathered. The research concludes with the findings obtained from theoretical and empirical parts. In this research, the analysis of adaptation of international news from English into Lithuanian has been conducted. It showed that adaptation processes proposed by Mossop (2010) are employed in translation of international news from English into Lithuanian. Summary and fictive reporting were the most common adaptation processes employed in the translation of international news articles. Furthermore, reconstructive reporting was identified in less than a third of the analysed texts, suggesting that it is the least commonly employed adaptation process in this type of work. Some of the collected Lithuanian articles were translated literally without undergoing any adaptation, therefore they were regarded as instances of plain reporting. Finally, there were no instances of transcreation process recognized in the analysed target articles. Presumed reasons of adaptation involved not conveying repetitive and vague or irrelevant information to the target readership, providing clarifications regarding foreign concepts or names by adding additional information, including pronunciation of names and surnames, changing the structure of the article to put more relevant information at the beginning as well as simplifying parts of the text. Furthermore, probable reason for plain reporting was that the source news articles did not contain any material or intricate cultural elements for which Lithuanian audience would need adaptation. |
