| Abstract [eng] |
Migration plays a significant role both culturally, economically and socially. Since time immemorial, migration has been a solution for people when times are hard. In today's world, globalization and technological advances make talent an essential driver of economic growth. In developed countries, highly qualified immigrants are highly valued, contributing to economic development. For this reason, there is an intense competition for talent, which can have both positive (cultural exchange, scientific research) and negative (population decline, economic decline) consequences. Migration of highly qualified workers has been increasing in recent years. The EU promotes legal migration in order to reduce the existing labor shortage problem and accelerate economic development (European Parliament, 2020). However, it is crucial to strike a balance between free labor migration and economic and social convergence of the regions. Attracting talent strengthens countries' economies, as immigrants bring new skills and knowledge and increase the country's productivity. The issue of migration and its impact on the country's economy is analyzed by both foreign and Lithuanian scientists. However, many studies focus on the overall analysis of immigrant flows, but not on highly educated immigrants. This study will allow to assess the impact of highly educated immigrants on host countries and how the economic and social indicators of host countries affect the flows of highly educated immigrants. The obtained results may also be relevant for the formation and improvement of state immigration policies. |
