Abstract [eng] |
The purpose of this paper is to make faster and more efficient exercising of casual librarian functions by computerizing them. This would lead not only to time saving and improved processes but also would automate the gathering of data. The research let to evaluate the specification of museum libraries and to choose the optimal decision to computerize the functions of such libraries. There are two ways to computerize the functions of museum libraries: to adjust one of the existing information systems (IS) or to create a new information system specially fitted for museum libraries. This paper analyzes the ISs which are already created and could be adjusted for museum libraries in principal. Although there are many ISs created, none of them was evaluated as the right one for a museum library (no search by specific criteria, created for large public libraries, inconvenient user face or too expensive). The main reason of this conclusion is that museum library points up the wide description of the printings but not the lending of the books. Museum libraries are not these public libraries for which all existing ISs are created for. The object of this paper is the library or War museum of Vytautas the Great. The first part of this paper is based on the analysis of existing ISs and the characteristics of museum library’s activity. The project of the new IS is represented in the second part, testing results and quality evaluation are the subjects of the third and the forth parts of the paper and the user manual is represented in the fifth part of the paper. The results of the paper show that the new IS adjusted for museum library proved the efficiency of its activity and let save time. Created IS is universal and can be adjusted to other museum libraries. There is a possibility to add new attributes to describe printings or readers. The system can be improved by adding new tables, forms, queries, reports, which could extend the functions of museum library IS. |
