Abstract [eng] This work presents the research and development of continuous carbon fiber reinforced solid and cellular composite structures based on the additive manufacturing technology with improved quality and mechanical properties. To achieve this aim, thermoplastic polymer composites were 3D printed by using a modified material extrusion head. Composite structures were reinforced with short and continuous carbon fiber to examine their mechanical performance while using standard printing process parameters. The influence of various printing process parameters (extrusion temperature, extrusion multiplier, and extrusion width) on the mechanical properties of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite were further investigated. After the successful fabrication of solid composites, a methodology and a process for the manufacturing of cellular composite structures reinforced with continuous carbon fiber was developed and mechanical performance was determined. To improve the quality and mechanical performance of composite structures, controlled cooling effect was introduced and its influence on the quality and mechanical properties of continuous carbon fiber reinforced composites were investigated. The effect of the layer height and layer orientation on the mechanical performance and quality of the manufactured composite parts were determined and analyzed by estimating the porosity and reinforcement contents. The air void volume was calculated using the X-ray computed tomography and matrix dissolution methods. Performed experimental investigations and received results are extremely helpful for the technological progress of the process, and quality improvement of 3D printed composite structures.
