Abstract [eng] |
Since the dawn of civilization, the river has been a part of society and settlements have sprung up around it to take advantage of its resources, conduct trade, and for protection. As a result of the accelerating growth of the population, the city is currently becoming denser and new constructions are emerging from it. Thus, the riverfront, which is a part of the city, is becoming a popular location for real estate developments because of its gorgeous perspective. However, the river and riverfront are an integral part of the natural framework, and these developments can harm the ecological aspects of the river and riverfront. In addition, the function and role of the river can also be impacted by developments. This thesis was carried out to provide guidance for the development and to demonstrate that it is possible to promote development in the riverfront while retaining its natural aspects. This thesis is structured into 3 parts, theoretical and empirical research, and experimental design. The theoretical research analyses the river’s role, function, influence on the city, the river as part of the social system and the principles of sustainable riverfront development. Then, the information collected was inducted to produce the hypothetical model of development principles and placemaking of riverfront development. The empirical research made use of various methods of analysis, space syntax, fractal, and sociological surveys to find solutions and factors for designing a successful riverfront development. The empirical research ended with the formulation of the conceptual model of a mix-used riverfront development centre. Following that an experimental design project was carried out to accomplish the research objective and to apply the factors from the conceptual model in practice. Ultimately, to evaluate the project, fractal, green index, and the 7 dimensions of the riverfront development evaluation table that was developed in the research were used and it has been concluded that the project has succeeded in creating a vibrant and ecological riverfront development. |
