While awareness of gender-based violence (GBV) is rising worldwide, it remains a serious problem and a threat to the female population on every continent. Audiovisual (AV) production is used not only as a tool to spread awareness and to prevent GBV but also serves as a platform for victims to be heard and find empathy and protection. Documentaries on GBV are broadly discussed by filmmakers and scholars of various disciplines, but the translation of this genre is an under-researched field in Translation Studies. GBV documentaries are generally translated into a single target language and rarely transmitted in multiple languages, which limits their accessibility and problem awareness across markets and audiences. Translation of emotional expressions, which build a significant part of this genre discourse, poses another challenge as they are complicated to convey without distortion. To find the right choice of subtitling strategy and tools to approach the tasks and issues of content translation, it is necessary to assess how translators are currently addressing the problems of rendering GBV-related terms and emotional expressions by employing subtitling strategies and to understand the text type structure of GBV documentaries and the links between the text types and the subtitling strategies. The aim of the thesis is to examine the subtitling strategies used to render the GBV-related terms and emotional expressions in the GBV documentary “You Belong to Me!”, which was chosen for this analysis because of its genre and the multi-lingual context provided in 6 languages (French, German, English, Spanish, Italian, and Polish) and presented in two different audiovisual translation modes: subtitling and voice-over. The availability of multi-lingual documentaries of this genre is relatively scarce and usually, they are presented in one target language only, thus it is a challenging task to find an audiovisual product of this genre to be able to compare and evaluate the audiovisual translation of GBV-related content. The object of the thesis is subtitling strategies applied in the GBV documentary titled “You Belong to Me!” as defined by discourse and text typology, from the source text in French and German to the target text in English. |
