This study consists of three main parts. First, review of literature sources is made. Second, theoretical-analytical study is conducted and technical sketches constructed. Finally, the project is carried out and presented. In the first chapter, a detailed review of late 19th century historical and stage costume is made, development of stage costume described and modern stage costume discussed. Based on the analysis made, goals of the thesis are defined. The second (analytical) chapter is comprised of four main sections. The first section deals with the classification of the 19th century garment elements, where late 19th century feminine costume is classified by the decade (1880s and 1890s) and type (every day and evening wear). In the second section, based on the study carried out, technical sketches of the 19th century stage costume are constructed and presented. Technical sketches are also classified according to the decade and wear type. In the third section, analysis of stage costume is made, based on Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull. In the fourth section, a survey of spectators’ concept of stage costume is conducted, results are presented and analyzed. The project part, based on technical sketches of the 19th century costume and the analysis of stage costume carried out, presents stage costume ensemble created for Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull. Characters of the play are described and characteristics of ensemble designs are created. For two characters chosen, patterns are produced by moulage drafting, and stage costumes are made. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations suggested, while the fourth and fifth and sections deal with the list of references and appendixes correspondingly. |
