Three different kinds of granules were made for this project: pure ammonium nitrate, calcium ammonium nitrate and dolomite coated ammonium nitrate granules. Their properties have been determined and compared, based on granule size, composition and production method. The main focus of this research is granule hygroscopicity. It has been found that dolomite coated ammonium nitrate granules are considerably less hygroscopic than other samples in high humidity conditions. However, when relative humidity of 65% was used, dolomite coating had no advantage over other samples, in fact, pure ammonium nitrate granules absorbed the least amount of moisture in these conditions. Also, it has been found that 3–5 mm ammonium nitrate granules can be coated sufficiently when using the maximum ammonium nitrate : dolomite ratio of 5:1. |
