Abstract [eng] |
The final project focuses on main cinematographic changes of the digital age since the end of the 20th century. Traditional methods of video recording and storytelling were transformed as well as the concept of cinema medium and its influence on contemporary culture. Cinema is no longer related with many of its physical objects, the majority of images have no indexical origin and become digital simulation. New methods of filmmaking do not only mean better possibilities of recreating any ideas in realistic and accurate way but also challenges the traditional comprehension of the future of cinema medium. The main transformation of cinematography was the introduction of digital effects since they led to the formation of chaos cinema and new way of perceiving images. The aim of analysis is to reveal the most important cinematographic transformations which were influenced by the introduction of digital technologies. The objectives are to analyse the theoretical background of digital cinema, to identify the essential cinematographic changes in the chosen contemporary movies and to examine the visual effects in movies as the main digital transformation. The final project is mainly based on theorical insights of S. Denson and J. Leyda (2016), S. Shaviro (2016), and L. Manovich (2016). The analysis was based on the most popular movies in recent years (2017–2021), the movies were investigated according to the transformations of digital cinema that were described in theoretical background. The analysis revealed that the essential cinematographic transformations in digital age are non-linear storytelling, new spatial and temporal properties, the vanishing of slow time and physical objects (cinema theatre and celluloid film), artificial origin of images and the dominance of visual effects. Realistic and convincing images become the main aspect of contemporary cinema, digital simulations aim to recreate the realism and naturalism of celluloid film, the quality of visual effects becomes central to the digital movies. Digital cinema is described as chaos cinema and mirrors the consumerism and dynamism of the society. Action movie franchises are the main example because the majority of objects or characters are created digitally and there is less authenticity in these movies. However, traditional methods of filmmaking or aesthetics of classical cinema, such as celluloid film or black-and-white cinematography, can also be applied in contemporary movies. Cinematographic transformations are controversial but they reveal the essence of cinema – constant change due to technologies, society or culture. |
