Abstract [eng] Despite lower level of innovation, lack of resources for innovation activities and capabilities, SMEs have advantages, demonstrate flexibility and rapid adaptability, enabling them to reap the benefits of external knowledge, engage in partnerships, and create added value. Purpose of the research – to determine the role of organizational open innovation capabilities in empowering individual competencies for innovation performance change in small and medium-sized business. Theoretical visualization of the interaction between organizational capabilities for OI, individual OI competencies, and innovation performance change has been developed. A survey of a sample of Lithuanian organizations was conducted in 2005. Classical statistical models and PLS – SEM analysis of structural equation modeling were applied. The survey revealed that organizational capabilities for OI without individual OI competencies have no hypothetical relationship with the change in innovation activity. However, the relationship between individual OI competencies and innovation performance change has been confirmed. The survey identified a set of individual OI competencies in SME organizations, but there is less diversity in this set compared to the survey in the general population. Having empirically verified the role of organizational capabilities for OI as a mediator in enabling individual competencies for innovation performance change, the study confirmed that the impact of organizational capabilities for OI as a mediator on innovation performance change is stronger than just the direct impact of individual OI competencies as an independent variable.
