Abstract [eng] The doctoral dissertation analyses a multifaceted, interdisciplinary phenomenon of cityscape identity, which is especially relevant in today's conditions of urbanisation, globalisation and constant change. The research reviews the current and available knowledge about the phenomenon itself, its assessment and regulation experience in Lithuania and abroad. The concept of holistic cityscape identity is defined, the essential constituent concepts of this phenomenon (sense of place, meaning of place, separate elements, element systems and overall structure) and their attributes are distinguished. A complex methodology for the assessment and modelling of a holistic cityscape identity is developed, covering knowledge and methods from various fields of science (for example, sociology, environmental psychology, semiotics, fractal theory, etc. are used in addition to traditional analysis of urban morphology). The proposed methodology is implemented to the specific case of Kaunas city; based on the analysis, the features of the identity of Kaunas holistic cityscape are clarified. The paper also proposes guidelines for urban development, which, respectively on the current situation of cityscape identity, would promote its preservation, strengthening or (re)creation.
